After three days of being lost, a woman is rescued thanks to her SOS message in the sand

(CNN)An Australian woman has a surveillance camera to thank for her rescue after she got lost while camping with friends. Deborah Pilgrim, 55, didn't return from a walk Sunday in Sedan, about 60 miles from Adelaide. Police searched for three days. They used a chopper, drones, volunteers and several other adjacent agencies -- without success. "We held great fears for her safety," the South Australia Police said in news conference. "That area is quite harsh...very easy to lose your footing. "Of c

New Smart Speaker System Uses White Noise To Soothe Sleeping Babies And Monitor Their Breathing

Researchers have developed a new skill for smart speakers called BreathJunior that allows these devices to monitor infants' breathing and movement while they are sleeping. Many parents find themselves constantly anxious about their babies' well-being, even when the little ones are asleep. With these parents in mind, a team of researchers worked on BreathJunior, which lets a device not only soothe a sleeping baby, but also monitor their breathing and movement as they slumber. Using Smart Speakers

Google’s Pixel 4 face unlock has one major privacy weakness

Google came up with its own face unlock system for the Pixel 4 and 4 XL using those advanced sensors in the phone’s top bezel. The technology behind it is similar to Apple’s Face ID, and aside from just letting you into your phone, Google believes face unlock is secure enough to serve as an authentication method across Android. (There’s no more fingerprint sensor on the Pixel 4, remember.) And it’s very fast. But BBC News reporter Chris Fox has noticed an alarming privacy concern with Google’s f

Catalan separatists have tooled up with a decentralized app for civil disobedience

s our age of ubiquitous smartphones and social media turning into an era of mass civil unrest? Two years after holding an independence referendum and unilaterally declaring independence in defiance of the Spanish state — then failing to gain recognition for la república and being forced to watch political leaders jailed or exiled — Catalonia’s secessionist movement has resurfaced with a major splash. One of the first protest actions programmed by a new online activist group, calling itself Tsuna

Excessive brain activity linked to a shorter life

One key to a longer life could be a quieter brain without too much neural activity, according to a new study that examined postmortem brain tissue from extremely long-lived people for clues about what made them different from people who died in their 60s and 70s. "Use it or lose it" has dominated thinking on how to protect the aging brain, and extensive research shows there are many benefits to remaining physically and mentally active as people get older. But the study, published in the journal

Pixel 4 hands-on—Thumbs up for 90Hz, thumbs down for Project Soli

NEW YORK—Google's big hardware event wrapped up yesterday, and, after a brief session with the Pixel 4, I'm back to report my initial findings. It's a phone. The feel of the Pixel 4 varies greatly based on the color. The black version is the most boring, with a regular glossy, greasy, glass back. The orange and white versions are where things get interesting, though. These have the whole back covered in a soft-touch material (which is still glass) that looks and feels great. It's reminiscent of
